Thanksgiving Prep Tips

Having a lot of people over for Thanksgiving? It can be hard to prepare all of that food in one day. Never know what to do with leftovers? I've also included some great recipes that will never make leftover turkey seem boring!

1. Set the Table in Advance

When it comes to preparation, you can never do too much. That is why the week of thanksgiving, I always set the table in advance. It can be very hectic on The Day, so already having your table set can save you 20 minutes. It is always professional to have it set up beforehand, because even if a surprise guest shows up early, you will be ready. It can also help decide how many dishes you need to cook. You should have at least 1lb of turkey per person, and 1 small side per person. By setting out the plates, you can count and make sure you'll have enough food for everyone. On top of that, it is fun finding small things around the house to decorate the table with. This place setting includes fake flowers, scented pine cones, little glasses with glass pumpkins, and paper leaves. Our family has a tradition in which every year we write something we are thankful for on paper leaves. Then, on Thanksgiving day, we take turns picking them out randomly and reading them. It is always fun to hear what each person said.

2. Prep Your Dishes

Prepping in advance is very important if your planning on having a large number of people over. I understand that everything tastes better fresh, but sometime it is impossible to make everything in one day. That is why every year, I write out the menu of what will be served, and then split it amongst the week. Dishes you can make very early, like cranberry sauce, can be cooked first. Pies can also be cooked in advance, because they last a while. The actual turkey and vegetable sides will need to wait to cook until Thursday, but dishes like sweet potato and lasagna can be prepped (but not cooked) the night before. Overall, prepping your food can take off stress on Thanksgiving so that you can enjoy yourself and not spend the entire day in the kitchen.

3. Leftover Recipe Ideas

I obviously don't have pictures of leftover thanksgiving recipes yet, but I would like to share some ideas with you if your stumped about what to do with leftovers. First things first, the classic turkey sandwich. Some people like gravy on theirs, some like cranberry sauce, and some like both (or neither). Which one are you? Another great idea is to turn your sandwich into a Panini. If you don't know what a Panini is or how to make it, I've got a great post for you here. You can also take crescent dough, and roll up some leftovers in that. After you cook it, it turns into a delicious turkey pocket. I have seen recipes where you turn it into a casserole, muffins. breads. nachos, pot pies, etc. A great place to look for more recipes is here.

That is the conclusion to some tips you can use to prep for thanksgiving. Let me know which ones you used, or if you have any tips I didn't mention. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving this week, and I'll try to update you with some dishes I make.
xx Hanna
